What we store

What this site knows about you: very little. Here is all of it.

If you only look around

The pages, pictures, films and letters all come from our own addresses. There are no advertising scripts, no analytics scripts and no trackers on them.

The site is served by Cloudflare. Like any host, it handles the network address your request comes from and the kind of browser you use, so that it can deliver the pages and turn away abuse. We look only at totals, such as how many times a page was opened.

What stays on your device

The site itself sets no cookies. It keeps a few small notes in your browser’s own storage, and they are never sent to us:

  • Your light: first light, after dark, or follow my clock.
  • Your motion setting, if you turned motion off.
  • Whether you added a light to the founding wall, so it still shows when you come back.
  • That you have seen the opening, until you close the tab, so it plays once.

To choose the light, the page reads the time on your device and whether your device is set to light or dark. It does not ask for your location and does not work it out. Clearing your browser’s data for this site removes all of the above.

If you add your light

We store your email address, when you signed up, which page you signed up from, and which version of this note was in force. That is the whole record. No name, no location, no money.

We use it to write to you when the organization is formed, and for nothing else. We do not sell it, share it or use it for advertising. To be taken off the list, write to hello@builditrightamerica.org from that address and we will delete it.

Two things protect the list:

  • A check that tells people from bots. When you click into the form, a check from Cloudflare (Turnstile) loads. Cloudflare receives technical details about your browser and connection to make that call, and may keep what it needs in your browser to do so. It does not load unless you reach for the form.
  • A daily limit. To stop one visitor adding lights over and over, the sign-up counts attempts from the same network address in a day. It does not keep the address: it keeps a one-way scramble of the address and the date, which is different every day and is deleted within seven days.

The number of lights shown on the wall moves in steps, not one at a time, and only once a minute. That is deliberate: it makes it hard to use the number to test whether a particular address is on the list.

If you write to us

We keep your message for as long as we need it to answer you.

What you can ask for

Wherever you live, you can ask what we hold about you, and ask us to correct it or delete it. Write to hello@builditrightamerica.org.

Who is responsible

Build It Right is an independent initiative, organizing as a nonprofit. Until it is formed, this site and its list are kept by its founder, a private individual. If what we store ever changes, this page changes first, and the date at the top changes with it.
