The American Works

Six movements

Six ways to build the building that holds the machines. Each is seen twice: as it meets the sky, and as the world it keeps inside.

Terraced round pools of pale blue water on a white structure above the clouds, with a tall plume of steam and small figures walking the rims at dawn. A plateau of warm pools. 01Thermal A vast pale wall in pink dawn cloud with one tall glowing arched door, and a line of small figures walking toward it. A white wall, and one door. 02The Sealed Order Clusters of slender white towers carrying two rings, with a glowing glass sphere held between them above the clouds, and small figures on a pale plaza. A lantern above the clouds. 03Served & Servant A luminous ring roof on slender columns over a round plaza full of people, on a green hill in morning mist. A circle of light over the town. 04Civic Green hills at dawn with a long glowing glass ridge along one crest, mist in the valleys, and a few small figures. Hills that are the building. 05Landform A glass block in a city square at blue hour, filled with vertical tubes in blue, yellow, orange and green, with a crowd standing before it on wet paving. Everything in the open. 06Expressed Plant

  1. 01ThermalHeat made visible, and given away.
  2. 02The Sealed OrderThe windowless wall, made noble instead of apologized for.
  3. 03Served & ServantKahn’s own distinction, become a whole language.
  4. 04CivicThe machine as a building a county would put on a postcard.
  5. 05LandformThe building as terrain. You are given a hill.
  6. 06Expressed PlantThe plant is already on the outside. Celebrate it.
